Yes, It's possible and the first game's rom does exists on-line however you will come across many technical issues(you must buy a very old 3DS that has an older version of the software and must not update it cause it will lock), you can't download the patches of the game and the pre-patched version is almost unplayable and ridden with bugs and the gateway rom card is quite expensive and each game requires a different SD card so it's probably best in the long run to just search for a cheap Japanese 3DS device online and then just buy the eshop version of the new game that will be out in a few days.

I'd advise against getting the Gateway right now because one, you might face getting outdated, and two, there will probably be better cards in the future without as many problems (with bricks, etc). I'm not sure of the exact situation at this time, but there are going to be other less "non-profit" competitors that should 1-up them.
You're better off just eating the cost once and picking up a JP 3DS. In the end, I think you'll spend less time and money and you'll be supporting Konami.
Or you could disregard them and do it, up to you, lol.

Like i posted in the other thread they've already found a way(without a 3DS flash card) to tweak with the 3DS software and surpass the region lock so you can legally play bought games from other regions, it still has issues and some odd requirements but it's one step closer to getting a convenient option without turning to piracy.

What about things like patches? I'm not just referring to NLP here either. I'm fairly certain those are only available on the region specific eshop for said country. They might have thought of breaking the barriers, but in hindsight they didn't think about the former and DLC.
Unless they've found a way to decrypt eshop content I'm not aware of...

From what i read this is something they are debating on how to approach but i guess it's better than nothing, lol. I guess sticking to your devices' eshop and then also enjoying some foreign games without pirating is not all bad. And t's good that NLP and probably NLP+ Has/will have it's own patch updating system from inside the game's menu.

You do not under any circumstances want to use the modified launcher to bypass the region lock. That method is what has been doing most of the console bricks.
Also, Gateway put a trap in their software, it turned all of the clones running stolen software into ticking time bombs. Apparently, if you follow Gateway's instructions you will not brick your console. If it does end up bricked, they will actually repair it for free. You just need to send the console to them.
Gateway itself has a mode which allows you to run an emulated nand, basically.. you can run a version of the firmware aside from the console firmware. It is updatable, patchable and you can even buy on the estore (Not right now as an update was just released and Gateway needs to catch up, they are testing the update right now, it is apparently ready for release).
As people know it is a 2 part boot process. There is an emuNand on the SD card. When you boot, you start the exploit by doing a certain action, that loads your emuNand onto the console. It is presently running 7.x. It is always best to make sure there are no bugs before updating.
Note: If you run a Gateway or other card, at this point, kiss your save goodbye. It appears you can not transfer a save from LP/LP+ to NLP/NLP+ via the downloadable tools. (Need JP estore for that anyway) It is very likely this will not be fixed. Basically, the Gateway saves your savegame to the SD card, it does not check the tools for your save.
That said, there is an exploit out which is ready for release.. it works on firmwares 5-8 and can execute code, so things are about to change.
I am buying both, I have things in the post right now, I am doing programming and wish to do some homebrew code for the 3ds, so I might give it a look.
As of April 5th
Current Compatibility Status:
Current Official Firmware: 7.1 Current Hackable Firmware: 4.5 and below Current Gateway Version: 2.1 Omega Best Gateway Combination: 4.5 sysNAND + 7.1 emuNAND + Gateway 2.1 Omega
Previous
4.5 sysNAND + 7.1 emuNAND + Gateway 2.0b2
ROMs: Plays all ROMs, including Zelda ALBW and Batman, except for NANDsave ones like Pokemon X/Y Retail: emuNAND Classic Mode plays all retail games, including NANDsave ones like Pokemon X/Y Online: Does not work for ROMs, works for all retail games eShop: Works in 7.1 emuNAND Gateway Mode Game Patches: Can be downloaded for ROMs and retail game
As you can see, things change frequently and rapidly. The Gateway should allow you to play Japanese region games on your console. HOWEVER, if you accidentally update your console from the card, kiss the Gateway and the ability to play the game goodbye.
