It's most likely like I already said before: the developers have to compensate for the (poor) display of the 3DS by oversaturating what they want to display on it.
It's even noticable on the 3DS itself, just switch between 3D on and off and you see the saturation change (especially the girls skin color).
So the developers probably made the visuals with that in mind. The game being a 3D title they adjusted the colors to display the best in 3D mode and accepting slightly more saturated colors when 3D is turned off.
Looking at the state of the game they probably didn't think about the colors being way off when exporting to SD... or they didn't even care.
A fix would be easy, they just would have to desaturate the picture before saving it as jpg on the SD card.

i agree and i think they really had no other choice than to change it cause now they have introduced all those camera filters and effects and the soon-to-be-experienced sun shade that creates heavy shading on the girl's face and body etc and these effects wouldn't make such a deep impact if the girls were as bleached out as they were in the previous games.. still yes, it would be so nice if they somehow changed the saturation settings of the picture exports so they wouldn't look like pokemons in our computer screens... Also did you guys notice how much the girl's speed and movement is suffering when you play in 3D mode? sometimes it feels like it's in slow motion in comparison to the book view movement speed..

Frame rate is usually lower when you play with 3D mode on, but in this game it seems to be very low. Also, newest games run at the same frame rate in both modes. (Super Mario 3D Land and Mario Kart 7 run at 60 FPS in both modes). I don't think NLP runs at 60FPS even in book mode.

I made a Photoshop action to automatically modify the color of the skintone while maintaining the saturation and vibrance of the other parts of the photo. Original and modified photo: Download

awww, how cute~!XD i noticed that when the girls turn to their furthest sides they get some really good light/shade contrast on their face and body giving them a bit more substantial shaping, which means they must have set the 3D light settings coming more from the back rather than their sides which was the case in LP/LP+...:

good hypothesis there bro, i think it`s really strange for them to choose back light as the main light for the game who`s selling point is the attractiveness of the human face.. as you may know, human face, especially girl face is best looking when lighted from front and slightly above the head or from side and slightly above the head, human face will be at its worst looking when lighted from directly atop his/her head (creating a dark area under eyes) or directly under his/her head (creating an eerie effect) or behind his/her head ("rimshot" effect, good to create impressionistic view of the hair, and creaing a unique aura, but definitely not for cute girl).
i think it`s not really that the light is just come from behind, it would make the front of the body totally underlighting, but i think they have another light in front of the girl but too dim to make the face appeaars bright and saturated (yeah the current one is feel undersatrated, thats why it look so pale...)
Just wait until the patches arrive, we will see if they spot this stupid "feature" and correct it..

yeah, i`ve got a bit 3d animation background so i understand one or two thing about 3d. I know it`s hard to create a very attractive and flattering shadow to the girls with the graphic limitation imposed on 3ds hardware.. but even with hardware limitation, they should still can make good presentation to the girls skintone and shading.. all you need is just 3 light, key light, fill light and back light (and one ambient light for the environment).
Like you said, i think its not the hardware limitation that makes the unacttrativeness of the girl, it`s the laziness, incompetent lighting directors/artist that makes the final product soo horrible compared to the demo..
If team ninja can make the girl beautiful in DOA, even with hardware limitation on 3ds, then it`s really no excuse for loveplus team to create something this horrible, plus this game have been delayed for months! (and 9 month after DOA), so really no excuse at all...
It`s not hard to create a good lighting setup, you just create standard/typical lighting setup first, than re-iterate from these, you just have to patient to find the best combination of the light placement and the skin shader, so it would work in conjunctions with each other.. it may take a month or two, but it`s achieveable! with so much development time, it`s a problem that should be avoidable, it`s much harder to smooth out and lipsync mouth movement than make a good template light..
God i`m frustrated with the incompetentness of these New Love Plus development team..

I found this website with many pictures from the arcade version. I think that look is what they aimed for in the promo pictures. Directly compared to the 3DS they really messed up. Big time. Hopefully this can be fixed in one of the patches.

I found this website with many pictures from the arcade version. I think that look is what they aimed for in the promo pictures. Directly compared to the 3DS they really messed up. Big time. Hopefully this can be fixed in one of the patches. It is obvious that the 3d model and shader from NLP and the arcade game is created differently, different in sense of "creative directions". It can be created with the same team, but that`s highly very unlikely, so i will assume they are created by different team altogether. As rplus said the difference is too big, it doesnt make sense. But real world is also one big strange place, you can make a great model and shader, but if it doesnt suit the taste of the director/boss/the one with the decision, then you will forced to redo it until it suit the taste of the decision maker, even if the end product s horrible, suck, and disgusting.. So we have 2 probability: 1. If the team is the original team, but forced to redo their model and shader, then if they are instructed to "fix" their work back to the pre-release model they can do it with ease, because they`re the one who created it after all.. 2. If the team is different, and they instructed to fix their work to look alike the pre-release model then i doubt they can pull it off, because it`s very different on a sense of the shape of the model and mood of the shader and lighting. I must give my judgement here, their model and lighting is suck big time, it`s an AMATEUR work.. Even if with the first options, the one who created the model on NLP is indeed the original team, it will be one BIG hell of work they have to do because they cant just "replace" the old model with the fixed model and hope everything just went fine, because: - different model have different polygon count and placement, so they have to "restructurized" (re-skinning, attaching bones, etc) all the model to the recorded animation and watching it out for any stretches/glitches that can be happened, and WILL be happened -different model have different lighting setup, and this one is one of the time consuming setup, because you can`t just use 1 lighting to light your character and hope it will look good on different occasion, NLP at least has 4 different ambient light setup (morning, evening, night and special (like kissing scene)), and that`s not counting on the character-specific lighting to make the girl flattering all the time.. -different model makes them to have to re-adjust every and all animation on the game, watching for the animation glitches to happened and correct it, and this is also very2 time consuming.. So if you want this to be "fixed" to be like the one on the promo it will take very long time to do, it will like they release a "new" New Love Plus itself.. So on a logical sense they will not fixing anything on the model, except: - they release an entirely NEW NEW LOVE PLUS game with updated graphics -they are crazy enough to actually "fix" the model and packed all the data on the next update (VERY HIGHLY UNLIKELY and you will have to be very patient because the update data will be gigabytes in size) Of course if they really crazy and actually "fix" the model, then i will send them a thousand of love letter

hmmm..reading your post makes me a bit sad cause in my head it was as easy as stripping it from the current and just updating the 3D skin textures and repositioning the 3D shader: with just a little bit more professional shading I think they could make the girls look 100% better: but you might be right, it might actually be a lot more work than that!O__O;; Probably the main reason for everything going wrong is that with the previous games the facial features were all drawn images that would flash before your eyes make you think that she was changing expressions: but now their approach is very different, the NLP mouth and eyes are actual shapes that move and morph cause they said in an article they'd give the girls "more expression", that's why they gave the girls a new face and different facial features... (i'm posting this link again to have an idea how the girls were design in LP/LP+) game.watch.impress.co.jp/docs/series/20100430_365048.htmlplay the "豊かな表情" Rinko facial expression video to see the variety the old "picture animation" method provided in comparison to the 3D object morphing expressions of NLP.. sometimes the old and simplest way might be the best way, lol. ughh, i hope they'll aim for something higher in quality in the future: weekly.ascii.jp/elem/000/000/042/42220/
