Info here.
Wow, a N3DS without the 3D. I think this could be good for people who doesn't like the 3D effect. Besides it would be a lot cheaper, I guess. What do you guys think?

Hideous. Piece. Of. Shit. That's what I think Not enough that they have a portable device that's not mobile but like a DS (the Wii U GamePad) now they have a portable device that from a marketing standpoint resembles the Wii U Pad, that is mobile, can play DS games, but no Wii U games. Nintendos marketing is just fucked up and they try to fix the wrong problems.

i still like the 3d effect but it uses a large amount of power. That's why my battery doesn't last long.

I think maybe this might be a cheeky step towards nintendo slowly rejecting the 3D effect, testing the waters and then moving on to other projects?(possibly a new type of DS console that will be wii compatible like wiiU?)..
honestly in my opinion the 3D is a cool effect for a few minutes but it's too much construction/material,and then consuming time and coding hassle to game programers for something 80% of the DS gamers barely use..why not put their effort somewhere else other than spend hours compromising other stuff and the graphics to create 3D levels etc?(exactly what caused the controversial transition of LP to NLP)
I like how this console reminds me of old-school kiddie brick style handhelf consoles from the 90's(don't like those colors but i can totally picture it in pure white with a cute LP design in the front, lol). however a big disadvantage is those exposed screens, yikes!
let's not forget NLP+ was announced to only be in 'vertical mode' therefore no more 3D effect! so this is perhaps, maybe, kinda what they also had in mind since the recent consoles are uncomfortable to hold vertically?
I read somewhere that this is one big touch screen and not two separated different type of screens like the DS/3DS!!..but only half the screen will work as a touch screen with the 3DS games as usual..however if something like 2DS is the future of nintendo would that mean that some companies could benefit and use both screens as touch screens in future 2DS games? I dunno but it would have been that something special to convince people that this backstep is not that bad if they're trying to dismiss the 3D effect..but that is just my wishful thinking if this were to stick in future releases(along with this console being region free this time around ofcourse)..

Yep, it's one big screen, with a digitizer on the lower half of it.

They should consider dual touch screens but.... the most important...
NO REGION LOCK!!!!

JP blogs say that there is no release date and no plans for 2DS to be released in Japan and that it won't probably make it there in the future either.

I can see only one good use for the 2ds, young kids.
No hinge to break and it could be put in a protective silicon case so the youngins can play.
In addition to that, I bet this is a step towards Nintendo developing a gaming tablet.

Honestly, I find it very "imac". Except it is shaped like a piece of toast.
I was really hoping Nintendo was going to alter the 3DS or release a cart to enable connection to the Wii U.
That would be a fantastic idea, byo 3DS and connect to friends' consoles. The Wii U could then be used as a hub for multiple consoles to connect. They sure are missing the boat on that one. It would encourage people to spend that bit more and buy a console instead of a replacement wii mote.

seems the 2DS might make an appearance in Japan after all, here a list of recent Japanese Nintendo trademarks they’ve registered:
任天堂株式会社 商願2013-66010 Nintendo 2DS 商願2013-66367 Mario Party: Island Tour
it may just be for the sake of registering the idea so others won't use but who knows, maybe they'll release it there too.

should be perfect with a new love plus+ bundle since there's no 3D whatsoever.

The two recent pink ones are so cute, i want one but they either have to take down the region lock or create a Japanese 2DS for this to happen.
