I'm interested in the LovePlus games, but before I buy all willy nilly, I want to know exactly what I want to get before I disappoint myself thinking, "Oh, I should have done this instead!"
Anyway, I understand that the English patches only work so far with the first LovePlus, so if I get that one, which of these are more practical: "Love Plus Translation" or "Love Plus Guide"?
Also, as easy as it would be to settle with the first LovePlus, "LovePlus +" and "New LovePlus" look really really good, but there are no patches for those, so would the "Love Plus Guide" still help, or would I be better off with the first LovePlus?
(I think I heard about problems with New LovePlus, so I may not get that anyway)
I am only looking for the best experience with this game, English is important, but advancement may be more important, but I guess I'm asking ultimately for the highest recommendation.

I never played the game using the english patch, Jewelchan's guide was always enough for me. I think the biggest problem with LP is that it becomes repetitive real quick, LP+ has a lot more options and events and most of them are documented in the Guide or here in the forum.
NLP is another story, as you'll need not only to buy the game but also a japanese 3DS to be able to play it. I really don't recommend starting with it.
I think LP+ offer us the best experience. Even if you don't understand the language we can always help you with it.

One question that I have for using the internet: Will I have enough time to check up on this forum or the guide as I'm playing the game or will the game catch me on my prolonged silence as I'm checking? And just so I'm clear: - Love Plus > Too Short,
- New Love Plus > Too Advance,
- Love Plus + > Just Right

It's not that NLP is too advanced, it's just.....not as good as the others, and you may get turned away from the game if you start there. As far as Jewelchan's translation, it covers every piece of dialogue in the game, so I doubt you would get stuck, but as said before, it doesn't even have half of the content Love Plus+ does. However, the Love Plus Guide doesn't cover plus+ at all, so it would be best to have at least a little understanding of Japanese to play it. (This game's Japanese can be quite heavy sometimes, in case you were wondering) However, the only thing I could think that would be different enough to get you stuck is a few minor new events, some extra features for LovePlus mode, and the Atami trip, which we have a guide on here.
So, if you don't know Japanese, it's a matter of understanding vs. content.
And to answer your question, the games do have a real-time mode, but as long as you don't miss something you scheduled or don't touch the mode at all, you should be fine.

Dumb Question this time: Ignoring NLP and 3DS, are LP and LP+ compatible with all the following DSs?: - Nintendo DS
- Nintendo DS Lite
- Nintendo DSi
- Nintendo DSi XL

So Jewelchan's translation wouldn't help in LP+, Love Plus Guide doesn't help either in LP+, I need to learn Japanese to play... This is so discouraging! Yet when you say "which we have a guide on here" for things like minor new events, extra features, and the Atami trip, if I use that and the Love Plus Guide, would that be enough? (Again: Just getting all necessary information)

You don't need to learn japanese to play, actually you can use it to learn japanese. I've learned a lot playing it.
Love Plus Guide does help you a lot in LP+, as everything that is in LP is also in LP+, of course it doesn't cover a lot of the new things, but again, most of that is covered here.
LP and LP+ are compatible with all models of NDS and 3DS.

As he says, the LP willgive you a stepping grpind, then on LP+ you go a step higher. Playinglp first woll get you used to the system better, so start with that fiest. As far as japaneae goes, it helps if you have patienxe to search, soyou learn, just dont expect to get the hang of things the forst tryand you will be fine

(Sorry if my "backtracking" annoys):
So LovePlus Guide is enough, provided that I also use the extra guide here described by heyman.
Sounds simple enough. ;D
Perhaps, if LP helps me learn Japanese, I could try taking a class anyway, seeing that Arabic isn't available at the college I go to.
I guess I should then get 3DS, in the event that an English patch or even version of the NLP ever comes to market. (btw, Did Japan fix their NLP yet? Heard it was recalled.)

Thank you na00 and heyman (and all other later responders) for answer so quickly, I was unsure how active this site was, which is very helpful so far.

A patch to fix some of the bugs in NLP was released a few weeks ago, it did fix some things but caused some other bugs to occur. Another patch will be released in a few weeks.
If you buy a 3DS keep in mind that it is region locked, so you can't play japanese 3DS games in a non-japanese 3DS (japanese NDS games work fine though).
Also, translation patches can only be used on a ROM not in the actual game cartridge, so you need a flashcard or an emulator to play LP using the english patch.

i would suggest you play koveplus with the English patch on your computer or on a flash rom for a Ds lite/Dsi..keep your eyes and ears open and memorize how the game works what she asks for and what she usually talks about, after playing the patch for 6 months you'll probably run out of new stuff to see and the game will run into a recurrent routine but you'll be then able to move on to the other later formats since you'll be so aware of how the game works and you'll be able to understand the girl quite frequently when she talks by then..

Okay, then I'm back to Nintendo DSi XL. Can I not download the patch on my computer then somehow transfer it to the Nintendo DS console? I'm not savvy with DS. Super Nintendo and GameBoy Original, that's all I know, lol.

For that, you'll need a flashcard to use in your DS. You can probably find one for around $20 if you search the web a bit.

Most of the people are always on, but since the majority knows what is going on,they tend to just end up answering questions rather than just post random things.
Also,we're glad we could help.
Now,to answer the question, it depends...I'm not sure how compatible or if it is still being sold, but there was some sort of save transfer hardware that came out a few years ago. It was used to back up save date from the original cart to the PC and vice versa.
Maybe if you played it on an emulator or flash card, maybe you are able to transfer said file tothe original game and continue from that.
If is just to play the game with a patch, it will have to be the Flashcard way.
Besides that, the patch isn't really necessary if you give it time. Going by the guide that jewel made, you can get through the first game just fine. Then as I said before, since LP+ just adds to the experience, if you got the hang of LP, LP+will be easy to follow through.
